01/02/10- Lecture: Theatre/ Field trip: Globe

Covering the topic and history of theatre proved to be very insightful and interesting. We learned how London is the Theatre Capital of the world, which I found interesting since I assumed the theatre capital was our own Broadway. The industry of theatre goes back 400 years and interest in the theatre is constantly growing in terms of ticket sales and with its vision for new shows ranging from Les Miserables to Jerry Springer the Opera.

We also covered more general history leading up into the development of theatre. When the Romans invaded and ran Britain, the historian Tacitus (?) stated that the Romans were able to have the Britain’s behave by having theatre performances to make them want to be like the Romans. The arena was a big form of entertainment and performed in the way of gladiator battles where they would burn pine cones to mask the scent of the blood.

One aspect of theatre that I found interesting was the mystery (?) shows where there would be a traveling stage next to churches which would perform scenes from the bible. I think that would be fun to see and experience a traditional form of theatre in present day.

The fieldtrip itself was amazing as well, to be able to get to learn the history and see the inner workings of the Globe. I have been fortunate to see Merchant of Venice performed there and would love to go again, hopefully to see Macbeth

Though my field of study is Business and Fashion, theatre is an industry that can pertain to any field. In business (and in most fields), there will be some point where you have to try to sell yourself to a firm or to try to persuade people that your product or service is the best, and I think that means a little bit of persuasive speaking and some acting techniques are needed. In fashion, sometimes the garments someone design is strictly for drama and of course costumes/clothing (unless if you’re Daniel Radcliff in Equitus) are directly tied into every single theatre performance. Overall, theatre is an industry that is important to every culture and will be important forever.

  1. Gabby, isn't it interesting how people used theatre, at first, to sort of act out scenes that are would be considered obscene, such as rape or blood fights? I think even up until today that these acts can possibly be part of the subconscious part of the human being (not necessarily being rape). Not only that but this type of representation is also shown in British writings and literature. It reminds me of the hidden desires depicted in Dr, Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, where one part of this man fulfilled his desires that deeply lied within him.

  3. Gabby I definitely agree with you!!! Could you ever imagine fashion shows without the drama and the acting. Look at the show we did at fashion week the whole introduction was like a play and set a mood to prepare us for the show...which was amazing by the way!!! The theatre is just a magically place.
